Acquiring a green card in the United States can be quite complex. Generally, the US only grants green cards to people who have the intention of staying permanently in the country. At the same time, not every foreign national who wants to move to the US will be granted with the privilege. A foreign national is required to have a sponsorship by a US employer or an immediate family member in order to gain permanent residency in the country. Otherwise, the individual will have no other choice but to somehow win the green card lottery and get a visa to enter the United States.

What Can Happen With a Permanent Residency Card?

It is important to know that a permanent residency card can be invalidated if the individual holding it neglects to renew the card before its expiration date. Permanent residency cards hold for only 10 years before they expire. Any person who holds a green card must file Form I-90 and undergo the renewal process for their card once every 10 years.

What if Your Green Card Has Been Lost?

Any green card is a highly important document that must be held by any foreign national who has been given lawful status within the United States. If your green card is every stolen or lost, you will have to replace it. You will have a good deal of conflict any time this card is lost because it can be difficult to replace. Of course, it is also your proof that you are legally in the country when not yet a citizen. After all, if the card has been lost or stolen, it poses a problem at any time that you have to prove that you are a legal resident of the country.

In that situation, you have no choice but to apply for a replacement free card. In order to apply for the replacement, you must file the USCIS Form I-90. You can do that either by obtaining physical paper copies of the document or simply go online to fill them out and file them electronically.

In addition to your green card being lost or stolen, you must replace it if it is somehow damaged or destroyed. If you have any changes in your personal information, such as your last name, you will have to file for a new one using Form I-90 as well. Filing online is the fastest and easiest way. Instructions are included in the form and you can include any pertinent information in the form of documents. Keep in mind that your case can be delayed or denied if you don’t get the information in at a timely manner.

What Happens Next?

After your supporting documentation is delivered to USCIS, you will receive Form I-797 in the mail. This is a Notice of Action that can be used as proof that you fled Form I-90. You will later get notice of a biometrics appointment at which you are required to appear and should later receive your green card in the mail if USCIS approves your case.

Additionally, you can get an INFOPASS appointment and visit a USCIS office with confirmation of your application, passports and copies of your permanent residency card. An officer will put a temporary stamp on your passport, which proves you are a lawful resident until you get your green card.
